Post subject: Sonar Software for laptop
Archived from groups: rec>boats>electronics (more info?)

For years I have been using plotting software on a laptop connected to
my Garmin handheld GPS. This season I will be installing an industrial
PC with a 15" screen into my boat dashboard.

I have also used for the past 15 years an Eagle paper plotter fish
finder. It still works fine but the paper is getting more expensive
each year and it is noisy.

Therefore . . .

I was wondering if anyone has made a software package and probably an
interface that would take the sonar signal and display it on the
laptop screen. (If not I am filing for the patent tomorrow!) Smile

You can usually take the NMEA 0183 serial data output from depthsounders
that output the $SDDPT and/or $SDDBT sentence and display is using
HyperTerminal or other terminal software. This will only display the
digital depth information - not the information in the water column.

If you want a fishfinder type display look at www.cruzpro.com/pcff20.html

Bert,

This looks exactly like what I am after. So much for the patent idea!

I am located just outside Toronto Canada. Is there any dealers in this
area so I can get a price on the box? Also I would like to re-use my
existing Eagle transducer - does this work with any transducer?

Thanks,

Don
